Drift wood is all the rage with today’s decor & design trends. If you can collect real drift wood and bring it back home (easiest when your family is traveling via car), you can make a real killing selling it for various uses.

Drift wood can be used to make homemade furniture, as decor in aquatic displays (whether it be an aquarium or pond) or reptile terrariums, in zen rock gardens, and much more. If you’re living in an area that is several hundred miles away from a beach with natural driftwood, you can rest assured that there is going to be a demand for this beauty of nature in your hometown.

Selling Sea Shells

Sea shells cost an arm and leg at hobby and craft stores. It’s not unusual for someone to pay $0.50 or more per shell. Why not collect them while on vacation, then resell them to the local residents who need them for hobbies and crafts. This is a great one for 8 and 9 year olds! Shells can be used in a thousand different ways, such as:

  • In jewelry
  • In candle displays
  • In beach themed wedding centerpieces
  • As picture frames
  • As wind chimes
  • In aquarium or pond decor
  • In three dimensional art
  • and more!

Sea Glass!

If you have never heard of Sea Glass, it’s actually a really neat little story. Sea glass is broken pieces of glass that resembles smooth stones or marbles. The glass has been worn by the sand, rocks, and water, so it is no longer sharp. Sea glass comes in all different colors and shapes; and it is actually caused by littering. These pieces of glass are usually decades old, from people throwing glass bottles, decor, dishes, and more out into the water. It makes for a gorgeous up-cycle craft, especially for beach inspired design or for table candle settings.

You would be amazed at the beautiful jewelry that can be made with sea glass. You could either use the sea glass in your own products, creations, or art, or you could simply sell the sea glass. Your best bet is going to be to find as quiet of a beach as you possibly can when hunting for sea glass. Heavily trafficked beaches will be picked clean as soon as intriguing items wash up; quiet beaches tend to accumulate more cool stuff, such as sea glass.

If kids are interested in making jewelry, sea glass is a beautiful, free gem to start with. You can use sea glass in earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets, anklets, head bands, and more. Coupled with some wooden beads and hemp twine, you'd have a gorgeous line of eco friendly, recycled jewelry.
